So I've done some more zoning and have extended the highway quite a bit. This new development prompted finishing up some service interchanges. Expressway usage is now much higher than before, with most vehicles (about 85%) being cars. This image shows the new highway extension, finally connecting the local freeway to the regional roadway. Obviously, it's under construction. The parkway leading south is intended to incite more development on the other side of the river. More work will continue later on...

    Cartersburg: A City You'll Love!

Chapter 2: The Town Is Here! It was hard work, but we finally got the town's roads in place! I think it's a good start on roads. The road system seems good for a small town... for now. The exit will go where the "double bridge" exists. Though, now that I think of it, we should probably make a few more roads to make the road systems look evener. Ah, and here's the exit too! The exit has been built! Now to get started on services.... soon. Here's how the road structure looks from the ground up: As every town needs, we need to put services in, to protect and service the townspeople. For a start, let's put a fire and police station and call it a day. I'm a little tired from building all those roads! The police and fire stations respectively, which look a little bumpy due to the hilly terrain the town sits on. Doesn't the view from the top look just lovely?

Small one today, I'm glad to update you with this traffic report on the local expressway. As you can see, it brings most residents to their jobs and back home. This is the highest amount of vehicles on the freeway so far, and checking it now the morning commute doesn't dip below 60 vehicles/hr from 5-11 am. It's usually a very steady stream of 80 vehicles per hour at those times. An increase in residential zoning within the next few years will really help to bring more attention to this roadway. This is only eastbound, but I imagine the numbers must be similar westbound for the evening rush hour.

    The United Cities of Talaran

I fully agree with you, mayorm, expansions in crowded environments pose very interesting challenges, and it is great fun to deal with them. I seize this opportunitty to mention that I have currently resumed work on RTMT, and this means that I'll have less time to spend on my cluster of cities for a while: updates to this CJ will be less frequent, but I'll keep at it, for sure.

Good update, Brian! I like the way you let those humongous condos grow in your city, even when they create extreme traffic challenges because of their numbers of residents. I'll be looking forward to see how you deal with those traffic issues.

I never leave room for expansions like this and always have to rework areas of my city. However in a weird way I find that challenge fun. Try to look around for things you think could be improved along with the rail layout.

Ocean View Surpasses 1/4 Million ( 250,000) Population !!!! One of the main reasons for the recent population explosion from 100 K to 250 K, has been after the 4 zoned condos grew in ( the 4 large 5 X 21 Park central''s ), is 2 of the 4 condos have already dilapidated from R$$ down to R$. The reason why this is significant , is this has the effect of nearly doubling the occupancy of these condos from roughly 20 K to 40 K ! ... Traffic has actually been handled fairly well so far. The main highway in the middle zones has been upgraded from RHW -2 to a - RHW -4. However now the 2 ends of the highway which are still RHW-2 are way over capacity , as well as this one main feeder RHW-2 which runs very close to one of the dilapidated Condos with the 40 K Sim residents needing transportation to and from work. So these will all need traffic solutions/ upgrades next..

On the 2nd load with the Peterbilt, there was a "minor" accident which resulted in the truck being totaled with less than 5000 miles on it, driver hospitalization for about a month and completely drained the company bank account. After driving for other companies, paying off debts and another bank loan our driver is back! With a new truck! 1970 Mack Superliner. Details on the truck coming soon! (after work tonight.)

    Cartersburg: A City You'll Love!

Chapter 1: Roads Today is a new day. I, Mayor Carter, have just bought a large amount of land for a city I declare Cartersburg. Luckily, the land is right next to an interstate, so we can have access to major roads right away - no need to contract new highways yet. We plan to call this city a "city you'll love", and we believe it will be. The interstate that includes the land. What a wonder of land! While we're at it, let's go ahead and lay out some roads. Of course, the interstate exit is very important. We've also laid out a bridge over the existing Trans-Continental Railway, a cross country railway that is important to transporting goods, which we plan to utilize later - it's very important. The beginning of an Interstate exit, as well as the bridge over the railway. Will it be tall enough? We'll see. Up Next! Let's lay out some roads! Will they be grid, or a beauty of engineering? We'll see!

Got a little something I'm curious about, is there an advantage to having farms before you zone commercial or industrial? Or are you doing it just for the story line of your CJ?

@bben, what you're seeing is a mash up of both data views you mentioned from SC4. The pie chart is a mod that I've installed, which shows the total amount of traffic using the selected segment of roadway in the instant you clicked on it. The red lines are the paths of the vehicles that are shown on the chart. The data view shown where everything is white is part of the vanilla game. This shows the volume of traffic. If you look on the top of the picture you can see my highway there is reaching moderate traffic volume (orange).

    The United Cities of Talaran

Since Brian is showing us his plan for the development of the city he is currently starting to build, I'd like to show the current state of one of the cities in my cluster, where I am not pleased with my initial design decisions. The city is Desognes, it is situated in the upper left corner of the cluster. Here is how Desognes is currently zoned; R1 was the first residential zone to be developed; fairly soon during the growth of the city I started the zoning of R2, the second residential zone, on the other side of the river, Similarily, I1 was the first industrial zone to be grown. As I didn't want it to become too large, and because I was still asked by the game to zone for more industry, I started the zoning of I2; I2 has remained rather modest in size, and at present I do not zone for more industry. C1 was the first commercial zone; i decided to place to the right (i.e. on the eastern side) of the citly tile. This was done because Desognes has links (highway and rail) with Marlande which is contiguous to Desognes on the eastern side. C2 is a very recent development, still modest in size, that will not be able to grow much, because of the terrain available. In retrospect,, C1 is too off-centered, relatively to the R areas, especially relatively to R2; Sims travelling from R2 to C1 must pass thru R1, and this generates an excess of thru traffic in R1. It is in order to alleviate this to some extent, that I decided, belatedly, to start the second commercial zone C2, closer to R2. All morning commute traffic to C1 comes from the west and the north, this tends to saturate the roadways and the public transportation (GLR/subway, local rail and buses). With these design flaws, the city has currently a population of 742'351 Sims. However, its growth has slowed down, and the traffic issues are getting worse. I'll continue to work on it of course, trying to compensate for the noted defects. This is in fact an interesting challenge, that is encountered in RL in many old cities (my home city of Geneva is a good example of that....). Some other cities in my cluster exhibit various other 'defects' and/or limitations due to the terrain, waterways, etc. I may document some of those later.

New city, this one I've set up as already having a freeway through it. The ramps are set up for future growth so I just have to upgrade them instead of re-configuring the highway. It's difficult to see, but the terrain is not completely flat. It varies by up to 14 meters around downtown. It's been heavily influenced by Seattle and San Francisco in some areas, although I only plan for this influence to be limited downtown. Overhead view. I plan to install the Alaskan Way Viaduct/Embarcadero at the waterline later. A few more pictures: http://imgur.com/a/uRvI3 Thanks for looking!

I'm bach again with a major update. This time I grew impatient and began construction of the massive slabs of concrete we call interstate freeways. However, I began building the freeways in the year 1954 and it is now 1962, without ever opening a single lane. No doubt this has caused grief and anger upon the citizens of the city, especially since they were planned in true Robert Moses style: straight through happy and vivid neighborhoods. The highway seen above was mostly completed, with all inner city freeway work being finished on the main lanes. Note there are no exits or entrances, as it was originally built to allow thru traffic. There were supposed to be 2 freeways constructed cutting through the city. Only one has been built, thanks to the intense protests and aggressive justifications by citizens who live in the areas that were meant to be destroyed. As a result, a half constructed freeway was built terminating just outside of the city. 2 homes were taken but it was a win for the citizens. This freeway was supposed to contain a number of inner city interchanges, however, the citizens feared officials would change their minds and just build it as a thru freeway like the other one. Lanes on this freeway will open in the coming months when asphalt paving is finished. More pictures and other city happenings are included in this image dump: http://imgur.com/a/5JcFR Thanks for looking!
