Mojang takes over Bukkit

4 posts in this topic

This just in: Mojang has taken over Bukkit after the former Bukkit team (or at least EvilSeph) abandoned it, with Dinnerbone beginning work on a 1.8 update. However, Dinnerbone has also said that Bukkit is not an official API and it never will be (source). A good summarized version of these events (likely more accurate than this) is located in the original thread on the Bukkit forums: http://forums.bukkit.org/threads/bukkit-its-time-to-say.305106/page-7#post-2756978

Spigot will remain independent of Bukkit.

Mojang acquired Bukkit back in 2012, after the Bukkit developers joined Mojang.

However, they've basically left the Bukkit developers to it up until this point, where one of the founding Bukkit developers has stepped down following the recent EULA changes which basically say that Bukkit is illegal.

The future is still unclear, with dinnerbone only saying he'll update Bukkit to 1.8. I hope this won't mean the end for Bukkit; although I'm sure that if it was the case, projects such as Spigot would continue to be developed.

A little bit more on this.

A former Bukkit developer has filed a DMCA takedown request on Craftbukkit. Things aren't looking too good for the future of the project.

Edit: Now Spigot has received a DMCA takedown request.
