Chapter VII: A Few Good Thoraeds

The early reign of Thoraed III is marked by a large peasant revolt in York which is hastily put down using mercenaries hired at the last moment.

F3fRygV.jpg

EbXFcEs.jpg

WJfQKyC.jpg

However, it seems that God has other plans in mind for Thoraed, as he departs this world at a fairly young age, ruling for only one year and then some. He leaves his very young son Thoraed in charge of the realm, and a regency council is assembled which will rule in his place until he reaches an appropriate age.

r9QqLOJ.jpg

The great war which had been raging on for the last 4 years ends as Aquitaine surrenders to the enemy alliance, and this war will be forever known as the 4 Years' War by future historians.

TgMneEt.jpg

The regents make a collective decision to begin the integration of Northumberland into the realm, whose existence was completely pointless by this point.

UmgKUsM.jpg

898eKz9.jpg

After many quiet years for the realm, young Thoraed finally reaches the age of majority and is crowned as Thoraed IV of England.

S0pJ8MP.jpg

The quiet years end shortly as in 1463, England is called by Norway into a war vs. Denmark and Scotland, a call which is gladly accepted (using this as an opportunity to gain some more Scottish land)

ApbTlW1.jpg

The English Fleet plays an important role in the war versus Scotland, trapping the Scottish Army on the island of Orkney and also blockading the connection from Ulster to Southwestern Scotland.

ZOyVN0H.jpg

eYpnaBJ.jpg

87aq197.jpg

The notion of a new model, 'Royal' Navy is conceived as a result of this, and gains a lot of traction especially due to Thoraed's naval-leaning tendencies.

etF88Fg.jpg

After completely occupying the main part of Scotland, Thoraed launches plans to send all of his forces to Norway to push the Danish out.

YJ9NBma.jpg

qgZLdEL.jpg

The first engagement as part of this plan occurs as a 25K strong English force meets a 10K strong Danish army in the city of Bergen.

2PhhuKK.jpg

A5brE7B.jpg

To follow up on this great success, it is ordered for the English army to attack the Danish in Eidsiva.

iZl6Ip3.jpg

DAsAp2z.jpg

hChHVtu.jpg

Scotland, nearly completely occupied, surrenders to Norway, a great victory for England. The area of Cumbria is ceded to England, and that is the most important part.

NsOiuCO.jpg

In Norway, the Danish attempt to counter attack our forces in Bohuslän fails as English reinforcements arrive, vastly outnumbering the Danes.

Bb3SaK9.jpg

k1Q48sh.jpg

x66v54z.jpg

This defeat causes a major morale loss for the Danish, and they soon decide to accept a relatively minor peace treaty from the Norwegians, releasing the Duchy of Saxe-Lauenburg as a sovereign state and exacting a tribute of 48 ducats.

3tM38Qq.jpg

In the aftermath of the war, the hero of England, Ordgar Essex passes away, dying a natural death. He is given a state funeral like no other before.

Chapter VIII: The Last of Many (1467-1479)

Advancements in printing technology have led to printing a huge amount of Bibles being possible, and it has been predicted that the future will see "A Bible on every desk, in every home, printed using this new technology." However, this breakthrough would also allow for grave heresies to take root easier...

fKV0Wmi.jpg

Tragedy strikes Thoraed as his heir, Arncytel, falls to pneumonia and some time after dies after an extended period of illness, despite months of prayer and fasting on Thoraed's part.

mr2K132.jpg

Zjg7Sv5.jpg

Advancements in weaponsmithing has lead to the development of a huge gunpowder-fired weapon termed a 'Cannon', that while heavy and inefficient at this point, would prove to become an integral part of the battlefield in future wars.

bl4LW0s.jpg

A new heir is found from among the English nobility by the name of 'Thoraed' of the Aquitainian de Poitiers dynasty. This means that Thoraed IV will be last of the ruling sons of Halfdan Hvitserk...

8brcUym.jpg

Thoraed sees an opportunity to test out his new artillery as a peasant revolt erupts in Lancashire.

iQxiujq.jpg

He appoints Tostig Clive, a lowly commoner who made himself known at a jousting tournament, to lead the English army in the battle against this peasant insurgency.

GW3p4ur.jpg

4i0lFrR.jpg

Now that the truce with Scotland that was signed following the war with Denmark has expired, Thoraed decides to take this opportunity to go to war with Scotland. While the Scots have fairly strong allies in France, as long our Royal Navy sails proudly, the French will never be able to touch us.

Eserkui.jpg

Most of England's allies accept this Call to Arms, including France's once ally Castile.

sOvOgUp.jpg

The Royal Navy is sent to patrol the English Channel for any French fleets, and successfully strikes down one of their wandering merchant fleets.

WBXiyQF.jpg

06L2YB6.jpg

In Scotland, a vastly outnumbered Scottish army is assaulted from two sides by our main armies, lead by Thoraed himself.

sAEWd4x.jpg

HFrasUq.jpg

While attempting to retreat back to Ireland, the Scottish army is trapped in Ayrshire after a Frisian fleet blocks access to the crossing to Ulster, forcing the demoralized army to lay down their arms and surrender.

R2xiFlg.jpg

On the Diplomatic front, England makes a spectacle of itself in the eyes of Europe, improving its reputation greatly.

4ZpWKJ7.jpg

Totally defeated, the Scottish surrender under moderate terms, ceding Fife to England and also releasing the Irish duchies of Connaught and Munster as independent states.

XpYKekY.jpg

1jOoLDM.jpg

These newly independent duchies are quick to accept English overlordship, becoming vassals of the English crown.

vXuV39r.jpg

aA1ki8k.jpg

In 1479, the concept of a 'Noble Republic', a noble oligarchy becomes popular. In addition to this, it is decided by Thoraed that it is once again time for the Witan to convene and decide on the path the nation will take.

Lky4j7J.jpg

Witan

Deciding that last time's Witan produced a very satisfactory result, Thoraed convenes the Witan to once again vote on the nation's trajectory for the future.

As was last time, the vote will last 24 hours by default. If I don't get enough votes within the 24 hour period, I'll extend the voting period by 12 hours.

Option A: Offensive Ideas (click link for more detailed overview of the idea group)

ugytILl.jpg

Since it lost out last time, I am giving it another chance, since it is such an important idea group. It's pretty crucial if we want to win wars in the future. :P

Option B: Administrative Ideas

uuVCyYS.jpg

Again, making a return since it lost last time. These are cool because they help out a lot with mercenaries, which are crucial when your army has been annihilated and you have low manpower.

Option C: Economic Ideas

i7sda08.jpg

This idea group provides several goodies to help us stay afloat economically like more taxes, inflation reduction, and production efficiency.

Post your vote in a reply below, and I can't stress enough that I encourage you to make an informed decision! :P

Lots of war. Too bad about the dynasty dying out. Hopefully England continues to prosper under the new leaders.

I will vote for Offensive Ideas.

The vote has closed. Offensive ideas took the cake, winning 3-2-0 over all of the other idea groups. :)

(I decided to end it with only 2 human votes because I want to get on with the AAR. I generated 3 more random votes, 2 for Admin and 1 for Offensive)

Chapter IX: Thoraed Maximus

The Witan narrowly votes on Offensive Ideas (3 votes), which was closely followed by Administrative Ideas (2 votes).

LLwpjJ6.jpg

Thoraed institutes new training methods for officers, improving their leadership skills.

NICkgI8.jpg

While it ultimately failed, the Eltham Ordinance of 1479 still left an large impact in England's history, being the first major attempt to expand the streamline the Royal Bureaucracy, making it much more efficient.

jPZDO6m.jpg

In 1481, England was called by Norway into a war with Sweden. This had ultimately put England at odds with Frisia, as the Frisians were allied with Sweden.

qyKnB1D.jpg

KpcWVGX.jpg

The entire merchant fleet of England was annihilated by the Frisians, leaving Thoraed with only one option: A hurried emergency commissioning of a new merchant fleet.

fv0DJWi.jpg

Concerning the army, our great general Tostig Clive dies a natural death in the middle of the war.

BQmNEJe.jpg

Deciding that this war was not worth its cost, it is decided to sue for peace with the ailing Sweden, who readily accepts a mere white peace.

SpjBNUn.jpg

ERhhfIa.jpg

A few years later, Norway calls England into yet another war, this one with Scotland and France.

KqqchcP.jpg

Thoraed exploits a well known tactic that has been effective for as long as Scotland has owned territory in Ireland. The navy is to blockade the connection between Ulster and Scotland, blocking any travel between the two by Scottish armies, thus trapping any routed Scottish armies in Scotland itself, leaving them vulnerable to annihilation by pursuing English forces.

vwtrStF.jpg

Our troops begin the advance on Scottish troops, attacking the Scottish Army while they are tied down besieging Fife. An easy victory for the English.

jWRpEDU.jpg

vT1IxVG.jpg

7hbB8FM.jpg

What remained of the Scottish army was trapped in Highlands while escaping for Western Isles and promptly eliminated by English forces.

0BsvSdO.jpg

It seems that not everything is well in the war, as it is learned that the French have amassed troops in English Brittany and are actively besieging it.

aBEAiEC.jpg

Our offensive leaning reforms have paid off as the army has greater morale than it ever has before.

31bCWtJ.jpg

The French occupy Morbihan, leaving Finistére the last bastion of English control in Brittany.

hKPEjpT.jpg

But even as the French make gains in Brittany, we make our own gains in Scottish Ireland, as the most important city in Ireland, Dublin, is occupied by us.

bzV3CBE.jpg

We promptly occupy the capital of the Scottish, Inverness.

YDtoQxe.jpg

Totally defeated, the Scottish surrender, releasing the Irish duchy of Leinster as a sovereign state and paying a tribute of 93 ducats to Norway.

PehmRb9.jpg

Thoraed is quick to jump at the opportunity of gaining another Irish vassal, and signs Royal Marriage and Alliance agreements with Leinster.

OFCp5Rj.jpg

And as one Irish duchy appears, Thoraed arranges for the integration of his vassal of Munster into the greater English realm.

Chapter IX: A New Dynasty (1492-1500)

While the offensive reforms benefitted the nation's offensive capabilities in a great way, the focus on offensive also brought abandonment and decay of the nation's once respected fortifications.

2jO330N.jpg

In 1493, new advances in military technology brought about the arquebus, the first firearm to be effectively used on the European battlefield.

gSPUb40.jpg

Thoraed begins the integration of Connaught, further expanding English hegemony over Ireland.

QhwXshb.jpg

Meanwhile, he sends a generous gift to the Duke of Leinster, who then gladly accepts to become a vassal of England.

TKYcd2n.jpg

qtCs34d.jpg

xBUhOH4.jpg

A French agent was discovered fabricating their claims on the southern English coast, however Thoraed feels safe knowing that the French, no matter how large their army, will never be able to set foot in England as long as the Royal Navy exists.

40FChI5.jpg

And in 1495, Thoraed IV Hvitserk, the last of his line, dies a natural death at the ripe old age of 63. Thoraed de Poitiers succeeds him as Thoraed V of England.

S9F2eyk.jpg

As expected, Thoraed V's succession is not entirely peaceful, as a whole host of pretenders threaten to bring the nation into total chaos.

tQ11D8g.jpg

Not to be dismayed by this, Thoraed continues the legacy of his Hvitserk predecessors by passing more offensive reforms.

zC85m27.jpg

As England enters the 16th Century, what fortunes and trials will it see under its new de Poitiers rulers?

TC: Core provinces are provinces that you consider an integral part of your realm. Having a province as a core gives several bonuses, most importantly to taxation, trade, and manpower. Core provinces also are more loyal to you than non-core provinces. You also get a free CB to reconquer core provinces held by foreigners. You can make a province a core through a process called coring, which costs administrative points and usually takes around 18 months.

Chapter XII: Civil War (1500-1511)

For England, the century begins rather violently as we are called into the Frisian-German border war by the Frisians.

ULZjTsH.jpg

tim0Doh.jpg

In order to assist the Frisians further in their war effort, the expansion of the transport fleet is ordered, from 10 transports to 20 transports.

2HVnm4y.jpg

A talented, young officer of the name 'Burgheard Gilbert' is found to lead the Royal Navy.

e1LCT0d.jpg

Meanwhile, our allies in Frisia suffer a rather humiliating defeat against the Germans.

ZQqC0Hh.jpg

The Germans gain a new ally in Italy, who is not expected to join them in this war.

eB3ECtC.jpg

Upon completion of the transport fleet, we transport one of our main armies to Frisia, to assist them in their ailing war effort.

j44yaWk.jpg

JXhN9p7.jpg

Our reinforcements were not able to arrive in time, so the army we sent ended up facing the Germans alone, themselves suffering another humiliating defeat.

ELg8ZbR.jpg

lQYol3A.jpg

Back in England, Thoraed announces his intent to force the submission of the Scottish kings under the English belt.

6XIv9X4.jpg

He finds an opportunity for this as the Norwegians call England into war against an alliance of Sweden, Scotland, and Lithuania.

ZNPoSf1.jpg

We sent an army of 13 thousand to attack the Scottish army that was trapped besieging the Norwegian Island of Orkney by our vastly superior fleets.

5U5y575.jpg

The ensuing battle was too close for comfort, the Scottish putting an stalwart defense in the face of total annihilation.

bARQTaK.jpg

d2AVx9f.jpg

Upon being informed of indulgences being sold by the Church in London, Thoraed declines an opportunity to take a piece out of the pie, saying that Papal relations are of utmost importance.

U4dH9Kr.jpg

The Scottish garrison on Western Isles falls in 1502.

joWckSg.jpg

Perhaps sparked by the poor performance against German and Scottish armies, the nation begins to perceive the Army as second-rate, causing much resentment among our upper classes.

oVQON0u.jpg

A new diplomatic corps is formed in 1502, fulfilling the diplomatic reforms planned long ago by Balthere I.

FaNAJAl.jpg

Soon enough, in 1503, the garrison at Aberdeen surrenders after a moderate length siege, the last of the Scottish garrisons to surrender.

T529tu6.jpg

Shortly after, the Scottish surrender to Norway, ceding the border regions of Aberdeen and Ayrshire to us and annulling all their treaties with Sweden.

lxWbbEA.jpg

And all was well in the realm of England, except one slight problem...

pwcmvPq.jpg

The tensions that arose following the succession of Thoraed V to the English throne have boiled over, starting an outright civil war.

8mO6wcQ.jpg

A pretender under the name of Harold Clinton marches on London, defeating our army of 18K that was stationed there.

H4kSTcj.jpg

We hastily send another, leaderless army to crush the remains of this pretender army.

DIzr3s4.jpg

3WeVxEe.jpg

Shortly after this madness Burgheard Brock dies, leaving England without its finest general.

H6GVPMN.jpg

In a last ditch effort to end this turmoil, Thoraed begins a game of playing the various factions against each other, increasing his favor with various factions yet also eliminating others.

TZhroUL.jpg

dsL7Uqy.jpg

MmtZaac.jpg

7BdatDW.jpg

This method proves effective, as what could have meant the end of England was quelled in the matter of a year, and the realm was once again stable.

Chapter XIII: Birth of a Nation

The integration of Leinster finishes in 1510, and once again Ireland is halved between England and Scotland.

xau0cmc.jpg

As Autumn 1510 approached, new advancements in shipbuilding technology spread to England, leading to the advent of the Carrack, the premier warship of its time.

DgoplaN.jpg

Andalusia, a kingdom themselves the product of medieval English Crusading, declares England to be a major rival of theirs.

3FQGn68.jpg

In 1512 came the discovery of the 'Star Fort', a fort design which was well above its time.

0pz4Qtz.jpg

England's recovery from the Civil War easier than most Civil Wars, as Thoraed had repaid most of England's debt by 1512.

PiRQBUx.jpg

In the North, Scottish Pretenders seize the Scottish castle of Inverness, causing much turmoil in Scotland.

6EZGTdO.jpg

Another innovation in technology comes as the Scythe becomes a widely used tool in the realm, increasing our peasants' productivity by a lot.

FOP4xR1.jpg

The focus on our Land forces has led to our Navy taking a backseat in our affairs, causing many problems with our naval force.

5yeqHrr.jpg

Disloyal Hibernians lead by a prominent Irishman rise up in Leinster in 1513, beginning the Irish rebellions of 1513-14.

92nK6sJ.jpg

We are quick to respond in kind, sending an army led by one of our finest leaders to crush the rebellion.

64C9uWl.jpg

QeVcjX9.jpg

jVEhXos.jpg

A second rebellion erupts in Munster soon after, this time initially succeeding in pushing back our troops.

J6oeJWO.jpg

However, we were able to throw our other forces at them, forcing them into submission.

rhoWujN.jpg

2bIWrMF.jpg

In 1515 Thoraed repays the final loan that was taken from the Civil War era.

yLk5oMn.jpg

A new type of infantry formation, the 'Condotta' Infantry, is developed, and Thoraed is quick to accept this formation.

59bWoAQ.jpg

Not to neglect the navy, Thoraed commissions for a state of the art Carrack to be built, the first of its kind in England.

mLXOCU8.jpg

New advancements in shipbuilding technology also lead to the development of the Flute, a cargo vessel capable of being converted into a transport vessel if needed be.

1Fgeswu.jpg

Two more carracks are commissioned soon after.

hw4Qkbt.jpg

The first major outbreak of heresy in centuries occurs in 1518 as Martin Luther, a German theologian from Augsburg, nails a list of ninety-five theses on the door of the Bremen Chapel.

ckxdXLV.jpg

alysHra.jpg

Thoraed brushes aside this news as 'just another Jan Hus' and declares war on Scotland, fighting for the subjugation of the Scottish under English Suzerainty.

cCSWKoB.jpg

Our armies are sent to attack the now-minuscule Scottish army that is maintained by the failing realm.

nRSIWAb.jpg

vSyysLs.jpg

6edOhzd.jpg

Back in Westminster, a new way of governing Theocracies is developed, although this is rather irrelevant to England as we are not a Theocracy.

3umAMEH.jpg

Ulster becomes the first Scottish province to fall to English armies.

u6Zq0sp.jpg

...Who is closely followed by Meath.

1BVggSM.jpg

But lastly, the redoubt at the Western Isles falls, and Scotland is totally defeated.

0UVdMlf.jpg

Instead of merely vassalizing Scotland, Thoraed decides it is not worth the effort to keep the Scottish kings in line and demands full annexation into England. Since Scotland had become so insignificant, nobody except France really worried so much.

D3Nxzt3.jpg

UVqHwYE.jpg

And thus the British Isles were unified under the legacy of the Hvitserks, once again.

6ij9Xqz.jpg

Witan

Thoraed V becomes the first de Poitiers monarch of England to assemble the Witan, as well as being the first to assemble it in a unified Great Britain. The Witan has been assembled to vote for the nation's next National Idea Group.

As was last time, the vote will last 24 hours by default. If I don't get enough votes within the 24 hour period, I'll extend the voting period by 12 hours. And this time, I WON'T use randomly generated votes :P

Option A: Exploration Ideas

UxGiexU.jpg

Taking this idea group will allow us to join other nations in the exploration and conquest of the new world.

Option B: Defensive Ideas

5RJfDdm.jpg

This idea group is the defensive counterpart to Offensive ideas, and gives several bonuses to stuff like army tradition, and better morale (this one is crucial in late game battles).

Option C: Economic Ideas

This idea group provides several goodies to help us stay afloat economically like more taxes, inflation reduction, and production efficiency.

Chapter XIV: Rule, Britannia!

Now that he is ruler of all of Britain and Ireland, Thoraed gains the legitimacy to proclaim himself Thoraed, King of Great Britain.

pg9Hkhl.jpg

g1sX6z2.jpg

At the advice of the Witan, Thoraed takes the 'Exploration' idea group, entering Britain into the conquest of the Americas.

zV1Ur9j.jpg

He also institutes a shift in British foreign policy, with Andalusia becoming a fierce rival of the British Empire.

41aafj2.jpg

Thoraed's policy of Benign Neglect pays off as the government's non-intervention in the affairs of Finisteré ushers in an era of prosperity for the province.

In 1534, the Triangle Trade is established, with Europe selling textiles, rum, and manufactured goods to Africa, Africa selling slaves to America, and America selling cotton, sugar, and tobacco to Europe.

The colonization of St. Lucia succeeds in 1534, and British presence in North America has been established officially.

Chapter XIV: Land of Opportunity (1534-1550)

Thoraed begins hiring conquistadors and explorers to further advance the British exploration and subjugation of the wider world.

KziwBi3.jpg

A council held by the Pope himself takes place in Carlisle which addresses many of the issues the Protestants were angry about. This would mark the beginning of the counter-reformation.

fm9STJ7.jpg

AFgdpkK.jpg

In St. Lucia, a prominent local native tribe is assimilated into our colonial population, and the colony shortly after becomes a self-sustaining city.

4CQzHZr.jpg

Cxd4dqh.jpg

Encouraged by the success of St. Lucia, settlers are sent to establish a colony on the neighboring island of Martinique.

0sx98HY.jpg

zCNe1eD.jpg

This happens to also border the French island of Dominica, which will no doubt be contested between Britain and France in the near future.

HnM62Zs.jpg

The Hvitserks of Lotharingia send a royal marriage request to us, once again bringing the Hvitserks into the nobility of England.

6QvbkaN.jpg

New advancements in Administrative technology have led to the development of a more centralized and modern form of monarchy known as an 'administrative monarchy'.

ea3DMeE.jpg

Speaking of marriage politics, our exploits in Norway have led to a de Poitiers becoming heir to the Norwegian throne, once again tying Britain and Norway together.

Ompquqh.jpg

After Martinique had fully developed, a third colony in the West Indies was established in St. Vincent.

boaoNvC.jpg

Following this, the Frisians declare war on Germany, and request our help in the war against Germany and their allies.

COpIS9t.jpg

Wanting to prove our worth against other European armies, we send our professional force of 19K against Germany's somewhat demoralized force of 22K in East Frisia.

UTrmFH8.jpg

vqSpdr6.jpg

However, as we were just about to claim victory over the errant Germans, we were defeated when Austrian reinforcements arrived to save the Germans.

R6klG7g.jpg

The Germans and Austrians fail to follow up on their victory as the remnants of the defeated Frisian/English force, supported by Byzantium, win a Pyrrhic victory in Zeeland.

wl25JPs.jpg

Qhaw6MS.jpg

The French are called into the war on the side of Germany, making this war also a general colonial conflict.

BmPP7RR.jpg

The Antillean Colonial Garrison is sent to capture Dominica from the French.

5N8yQty.jpg

The French, without a sufficient navy to support their colonies, are unable to send reinforcements to rescue Dominica from our armies.
